Scuttlebutt Guidelines

Scuttlebutt is an email discussion list for educators and scientists interested in talking informally about ocean education ideas, issues and questions. All educators and scientists interested in marine science education and outreach are invited to subscribe. The list is moderated by Bridge staff members.

Scuttlebutt messages should be of professional interest to a broad group of marine educators nationwide. Common posts include:

• new resource announcements
• requests for resource suggestions
• plant, animal, and object identification
• requests for proposals
• funding opportunities
• lecture and webinar announcements *
• professional development opportunities *
• educational travel programs related to marine science *
• student art, science, and engineering contests
• regional and national conference information
• job openings and internship announcements …and more!

* Please Note :  Event/program announcements may only be posted twice – once when registration opens, and once right before registration closes. With the exception of content corrections, posts outside of these guidelines will not be approved. Excessive submissions may result in suspension of posting privileges.

The following content is not permitted and will not be approved. Thank you for your understanding.

• petitions or advocacy
• political commentary of any kind
• requests for votes or donations
• crowdsourcing
• commercial messages 
• promotion of your personal brand and/or merchandise (stickers, shirts, books, etc.)
• broadcasting of unsolicited resumes or CVs
• requests for employment,  internships, or volunteer opportunities

Posting to the List

• Only subscribers may send messages to the list
• To post a message, first subscribe to the list, then address your email message to: scuttlebutt@vims.edu. Once approved, your message will go out to the list exactly as it is written. Moderators do not have the ability to edit posts, only to approve or reject them.
• Please restrict attachments to a total size of 500kb or less. Messages larger than 500kb will be auto-rejected by VIMS ITNS.

Unsubscribing From the List

1. From the email address with which you subscribed to the list, send a message to sympa@vims.edu
2. In the subject line of your email, type in: unsubscribe scuttlebutt
3. Leave the message body blank.

Privacy Policy

We value your privacy. The Bridge/Scuttlebutt will never share your contact information with outside entities.
